Evol Burrito Review: Spicy Steak

Evol Spicy Steak Burrito

The non-vegetarian staffers at Freezer Meal Frenzy have a great fondness for Evol’s Sriracha Chicken Big Burrito. We even called it “one of the best frozen burritos on the market” in our full review. It was with great excitement and watering mouths, then, that we ventured forth into Evol’s Spicy Steak Big Burrito.

As usual, Evol gets the balance of ingredients just right. The white rice and pinto beans create a great consistency, letting the cheddar cheese melt into the crevices between the vegetables. From our cross-section image below, you can see a chunk of steak and a slice of jalapeño in the left-hand portion.

Of course, the presence of the steak gets a little lost in the mix here, and the piece shown in the picture is a bit of an outlier. The fact that we managed to find one so easily is almost certainly not a typical experience. The flavor is still great, though, thanks in no small part to the veggie chunks and spices that round out the mix.

It’s not uncommon in the frozen food world for a product to be advertised as spicy when it has just the slightest hint of spice to it. That’s not the case with the Spicy Steak; this thing definitely has some kick to it. It’ll clear out the sinuses a bit.

We still prefer the Sriracha Chicken over this one, but the Spicy Steak works hard to satisfy the craving for something spicy.

We’ve posted our preferred cooking instructions in our previous review, but we decided to include them here as well:

Our preferred method of cooking these things is to pull one out of the freezer the night before and stick it in the fridge to thaw overnight. The next day, we preheat the oven to 350 degrees (Fahrenheit), wrap the burrito in tin foil, set it on a cookie sheet and let it cook for 20-30 minutes. (The Evol site recommends 60 minutes, but we’ve never needed that long.) Remember to flip it when it’s about half done. Using this method, the outside of the burrito gets just a little bit crispy, and the filling doesn’t get quite as watery as it does in the microwave.
