Evol’s line of street tacos is just the thing to get you through a long winter of food truck scarcity. Even the frozen version, which bypasses the wonder and glory of the food truck experience, have been the talk of the town lately. Because of all the good things we’ve been hearing, we here at Freezer Meal Frenzy decided to take the Shredded Chicken & Caramelized Onion Street Tacos for a spin.
As we mentioned in our review of Evol’s Korean Style Beef & Kimchi Street Tacos, we suspect the low meat content in the Big Burrito line is due to all of it ending up in the street tacos. These things are loaded to the brim with chicken.
There’s also a mix of onions, salsa, and corn to diversify the flavor a bit. Just don’t expect a lot of veggies, because they’re pretty scarce here.
Unless, of course, you count the included guacamole.
Inside the box is a packet of guac, which we found to contain more than we’d ever need. In fact, we’d recommend only using about a quarter packet of guac on each of these, leaving you with half a packet to spare. We didn’t take our own advice on this one, and the result is pictured below.
That’s a lot of the green stuff, right?
With such a large portion, the guacamole obviously takes over this dish. It’s perhaps akin to a guac spread you’d buy in a plastic tub at the grocery store, and any homemade version is going to blow this away as far as flavor is concerned. That is to say this is a decent guacamole, but it’s nothing special.
The corn tortilla lends an authentic flair to this dish, and we admire the tortilla’s curved shape that provides a nice grip. What we don’t admire, however, is how greasy these tacos can get, which mitigates much of the convenience of a shell that curves inward. They tend to leave behind a sea of orange grease, so make sure you have a stack of napkins handy.
Of course, some of our favorite foods are messy, so we can’t ding Evol too hard for this.
The Shredded Chicken & Caramelized Onion Street Tacos are a decent meal for those who crave a good food truck run but lack the means to actually make one. We must admit, however, that our frozen taco heart still lies with the Korean Style Beef and Kimchi version of Evol’s street tacos, which is spicier and has a better overall flavor.
