Lean Cuisine Lasagna with Meat Sauce Review

Lean Cuisine Lasagna with Meat Sauce

When you imagine the perfect lasagna, you probably picture something laboriously home cooked by Mom. We won’t ever expect that level of quality from a microwave dinner, but Lean Cuisine’s Lasagna with Meat Sauce is a halfway decent substitute.

One of the easiest ways to screw up a frozen lasagna is to spoil the sauce. Too often, we find ourselves slurping up a puddle of tasteless goo instead of reveling in a nice hearty sauce. Thankfully, Lean Cuisine does pretty well on this front. The Lasagna with Meat Sauce has a very tasty sauce that keeps its form even in the microwave. No soupy messes here. (We imagine this is the same sauce used in the Four Cheese Cannelloni, which we also enjoyed.)

We are a little disheartened, however, to see how sparingly Lean Cuisine uses its mozzarella cheese here. We almost feel a little ripped off.

The noodles are a little bit rubbery, but at a forgivable level. They’re mostly just tough around the edges with a center that’s just fine. The meat tastes alright — it’s not something we’ll find ourselves craving in the future, but it complements the sauce quite well and it has a little bit of a spicy edge to it. Not much, mind you, but some spice lingers in its aftertaste.

One thing that surprised us was how long the cooking time is, even in the microwave. It took 4 minutes the first round, then we peeled the paper and stuck it in for two and a half more minutes, just as we were instructed to do. (If you go the conventional oven route, it will need to cook for 45 minutes.) Strangely enough, we didn’t need to let it cool for as long as we expected; we waited about three minutes and found it to be the perfect temperature.

Lean Cuisine probably won’t be winning any awards for it, but the Lasagna with Meat sauce is certainly one of the better frozen pasta dishes on the market. This is something that was recommended to us — plus, it’s a part of Lean Cuisine’s “Favorites” line — and we can see why.
