Amy’s Shepherd’s Pie Review

Amy's Shepherd's Pie

If you’re looking for a simple, stress-free frozen dinner, Amy’s Shepherd’s Pie may not be for you. Even though we have plenty of experience heating up frozen food, we found ourselves slightly befuddled by this dish. We did manage to get it heated up, but it took us some time to get there.

The oven instructions for the dish are pretty basic: pre-heat the oven, remove wrap, and place the pie in the oven for 45 minutes. However, after those 45 minutes had passed, the dish didn’t look done. This meal uses mashed potatoes for its crust instead of a pastry crust, which means it never really looks done. We wound up leaving it in the oven until the edges started to brown; we assumed it was ready to eat after that. Thankfully, those assumptions were right.

Although this pie also comes with microwave instructions, we didn’t get the chance to try them. While we suspect that the microwave instructions are easier to follow, this meal doesn’t seem microwave-friendly. It’s hard to imagine a flaky mashed potato crust coming out of a microwave.

We were hungry and cranky by the time we got this pie out of the oven, but we still enjoyed it. The mashed potatoes tasted like they made from real potatoes, not flakes. They weren’t as creamy as homemade mashed potatoes — probably because they’re made without milk or cream — but they were a good fit for this dish.

Beneath the potato layer, you’ll find plenty of vegetables; the leeks and the mushrooms were especially delicious. We also enjoyed the organic garbanzo beans that this dish uses. The beans are a great substitute for the ground meat that shepherd’s pie normally contains.

While mashed potatoes are normally high in fat, this dish is low in both calories and fat. In fact, there are only 160 calories in the entire pie. The pie itself is fairly tiny, but the beans make it a little more filling. If you’re interested in a healthy, vegan pot pie, and you don’t mind the extra hassle, this is a meal you might want to sample.
