DiGiorno Pepperoni Speciale Artisan Style Melts Review

DiGiorno Pepperoni Speciale Artisan Style Melts

If you enjoy DiGiorno’s line of frozen pizzas, you may be surprised to learn the company also makes other pizza-themed meals, such as pizza buns and artisan melts. For the pepperoni lovers out there, they’ve created the Pepperoni Speciale Artisan Style Melts, so we decided to try them.

According to the box, these are intended to be snacks, so the suggested serving size is only one, even though there are two in the box. To further emphasize this, each artisan melt is packaged individually, each with its own crisping tray. You can easily cook two at once, but DiGiorno seems to want you to eat one at a time.

If you decide to follow the package’s recommendation and eat just one, your microwave time will be a minute and a half. We decided to rebel, and the microwave time is just three minutes. Note that the box also includes directions for heating in a traditional oven, but we wanted to test out the crisping trays.

When our melts came out of the microwave, they looked a bit messy but smelled incredible.

Even with the crisping trays, don’t expect a crispy bottom to the crust. This is more of a pan-style crust, and the crisping trays seem to be mostly to prevent the artisan melts from getting soggy. It all works, and these melts taste great.

The pepperoni is not in the classic circle shape you’re used to. Instead, it comes in thick diced chunks. Even what looks to be a pretty small piece is loaded with flavor, so don’t worry if these melts look a little light on the pepperoni portion.

As a snack intended for individual consumption, these little melts don’t go easy on the calories. A single melt has 320 calories (110 from fat), which ramps up to 640 if you eat two. If you’re on a diet, you’ll definitely want to save the second melt for another day, or give it to a friend.

DiGiorno’s Pepperoni Speciale Artisan Style Melts are great. You’ll want to skip these if you’re a vegetarian, but fear not; DiGiorno doesn’t leave the meatless crowd behind. For vegetarians, we recommend the Quattro Formaggi version of the Artisan Style Melts.
