Devour really is one of the best frozen food makers out there, especially when it comes to macaroni dishes. For example, their Buffalo Chicken Mac & Cheese is to die for, and their White Cheddar Mac & Cheese with Bacon is heavenly. So when we learned they’d paired meatloaf with a side of mac, we knew we just had to try their Bacon Topped Meatloaf with Smoky Garlic Mac & Cheese as soon as we possibly could.
Contrary to what the packaging might have you believe, this dish actually has a divider between the meatloaf and the macaroni to prevent the two sides from mixing. It doesn’t completely work, as the mac and cheese tends to make its way over to the meatloaf side when it gets really hot. Plus, once the film on the tray is removed, the ketchup splatters a bit.
We really didn’t mind, though. The bites where the two flavors mingled might have been our favorite bites of this meal.
On its own, the meatloaf is thick, juicy, and flavorful. Plus, you’ll find some big chunks of onions on top of it, mixed in with the bacon bits. The meatloaf is topped with a spicy ketchup, which is wonderful. It’s not quite as spicy as it may sound, but it adds a whole level of sweetness that’s out of this world.
The mac and cheese offsets this sweetness with a rich, smoky taste. We didn’t taste a lot of the garlic flavor, but the smokiness is undeniable. With the potent smokey flavor of the cheese sauce and the almost overwhelming sweetness of the spicy ketchup, the two sauces feel like they were made for each other. Combining them was a stroke of brilliance.
One word of caution about Devour’s meals: these aren’t designed for dieters. While this isn’t Devour’s most fattening meal, it’s got 520 calories (250 from fat). While it’s hard to beat Devour’s food when it comes to flavor, it’s definitely meant to be taken in moderation.
With the Bacon Topped Meatloaf with Smoky Garlic Mac & Cheese, Devour reminds us why they’re the kings of the frozen food aisle.
