Healthy Choice Chana Masala

There are a lot of appealing flavors in the Healthy Choice Simply Steamers Chana Masala. The cumin and coriander give this dish some kick, and the cardamom gives it a pleasant herbal taste. The textures, however, are a bit off. Nearly everything in the dish is either crunchier or softer than it should be.

Take the chickpeas. We prefer our chickpeas to be fairly soft; a slight crunch on the outside is more than enough for us. These chickpeas, however, were actually kind of hard. While we followed the instructions on the box, the recommended cook time wasn’t enough to soften these seeds up.

The cauliflower and tomatoes, however, came out pretty soft. The tomatoes were especially mushy. Thankfully, there weren’t many tomatoes in our bowl. The brown rice wasn’t perfect, but we didn’t have any major issues with it. The rice tastes great, especially after it soaks in the masala-spiced sauce.

In fact, the sauce is easily the best part of this dish. It’s a little bit spicy, but not overwhelmingly so, and the combination of flavors is absolutely phenomenal. It’s both aromatic and delicious. The ginger and chardonnay wine are a nice touch.

If the cauliflower and chickpeas had turned out better, we probably would have loved this dish. As is, it’s just okay. We love chickpeas, tomatoes, and cauliflower, but we didn’t love them here. Hopefully, we’ll see this savory blend of spices show up in another Healthy Choice dish.
