A lot of dishes that claim to be spicy are actually fairly mild. If you’ve been disappointed by so-called hot dishes before, the Healthy Choice Sweet & Spicy Asian-Style Noodle Bowl is a dinner you’ll want to try. This is one of the spicier frozen meals we’ve had.
Like all of Healthy Choice’s Cafe Steamer meals, the sauce is heated separately from the rest of the ingredients in this dish. You’re going to want to make sure you stir this dish thoroughly before you start digging in. The sauce is definitely the highlight of this meal.
The spicy soy sauce tastes very different from the kind of soy sauce you might see on shelves at the grocery store. It isn’t as tart as other soy sauces and it isn’t particularly salty either. Instead, it has a strong, wasabi-like flavor. The heat sneaks up on you; it gets hotter the longer it stays on your tongue. While there’s a little bit of molasses-like sweetness to the sauce, the spiciness overpowers almost everything else.
Thankfully, there are plenty of high-quality ingredients to compliment the spice. We loved the texture of the udon noodles — they’re thick and chewy, and they perfectly absorb the flavor of the sauce. We also enjoy the vegetables in the dish, especially the edamame. Edamame is a favorite of ours, especially when it has a bit of crunch to it.
We do wish the dish would have had more bell peppers. There were barely any bell pepper chunks in our bowl.
If you don’t like spicy foods, then you should heed the warning on the box and stay away from this meal. But if you’re looking for a frozen dish that will heat up your taste buds, this Healthy Choice meal is definitely something you should try. It’s got spice to spare!
