Trader Joe’s Bibimbap Bowl Review

Trader Joe's Bibimbap Bowl

There are few things in this world that are as wonderful as bibimbap. Though we’d discovered a few frozen food items in the past we hoped might make a decent microwavable substitute, we haven’t found anything that’s really impressed us. So you can imagine our surprise when we discovered this amazing-looking Bibimbap Bowl at our local Trader Joe’s. Could it be that Trader Joe’s has succeeded where so many other frozen food makers have failed?

One of the secrets to a truly great bibimbap is the sauce, and Trader Joe’s seems to really get that. This package contains a separate sauce packet that’s meant to be thawed in a glass of warm water rather than cooked with the dish.

Side sauces in frozen dishes aren’t always great, but when they work, they really work. And this is one of those cases where it really works. This sauce is delicious, and it’s very spicy. Spice-lovers rejoice. There’s also a pretty liberal serving of the stuff so you won’t run out halfway through your dish.

Now, let’s just take a moment to appreciate how incredible this looks when it comes out of the microwave.

Seriously, this meal is beautiful. And we have to admit that part of the fun of eating bibimbap is how lovely it looks before we start digging in.

But this tastes incredible as well. It is mostly rice, with the rest of the ingredients nestled on top of everything, but there’s enough of the delicious sauce that even the pure rice part of the dish tastes great.

The beef isn’t anything special here. It’s not the incredible, gristly cut you’d get in a real restaurant, but it’s perfectly competent. It’s certainly not the best part of this dish, but it doesn’t bring down the overall quality at all. It’s a pretty neutral beef, all things considered.

While nothing beats a trip to your local Korean restaurant, Trader Joe’s Bibimbap Bowl makes a pretty great substitute when you feel like staying inside.
