Eating Well Creamy Pesto Chicken Review

Eating Well Creamy Pesto Chicken

There are several low-calorie frozen food brands that can be found at just about any grocery store. Lean Cuisine, Healthy Choice, Smart Made, and more — it’s a fairly saturated market. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for yet another brand, Eating Well. After being a bit disappointed by their Gnocchi with Garden Vegetables, we decided to give them a second chance and try their Creamy Pesto Chicken.

Eating Well’s unique feature is that their meals come in tightly vacuum-sealed packages, which sort of balloon up when you cook them. In fact, there’s a cutout in the front of the box that lets you see the vacuum-sealed meal before you even buy it. It’s supposed to keep these meals fresh, but we’re not sure how well it actually works. It strikes us as a marketing gimmick.

Like the Gnocchi with Garden Vegetables, this meal ends up being flat and packed-down once you remove the shrinkwrap. Served on a semi-flat tray rather than a bowl, this isn’t a whole lot of food, as you can see in the image below.

If you like big serving sizes, you probably want to look elsewhere.

The ingredients are actually pretty tasty. The chicken is especially good — it’s thick and juicy and has a nice peppered finish. The fire-roasted zucchini is one of the most prominent ingredients in the dish, and it’s pretty good too. We also really like the nine-grain orzo, which makes a fantastic substitute for the rice that we find in pretty much every other dish like this. (That’s also why we tend to appreciate quinoa so much, though there’s no quinoa here.)

The pesto sauce is quite tasty, though we wish there were more of it. In most bites, you’ll barely taste it, but any bite that’s loaded up with pesto is delightful.

As the Eating Well name implies, this is a fairly low-calorie meal, at 310 calories (100 from fat). However, it probably won’t fill you up because the portion size is so small.

Eating Well’s Creamy Chicken Pesto is an alright pesto chicken dish, though it won’t fill you up. If the portion size were perhaps 33% larger, we’d consider adding this to our regular lunchtime rotation. As is, we enjoyed trying it, but we doubt we’ll find ourselves going back for more.
