Amy’s Black Bean Veggie Burger Review

Amy's Black Bean Veggie Burger

Amy’s Kitchen makes an enormous variety of frozen boxed meals, all of which are vegetarian-friendly. Whether you’re looking for pizza, breakfast, or an Indian treat, Amy’s almost certainly has something scrumptious for vegetarians to munch on. They even have canned soup in their lineup. But one of the essentials of any good vegetarian frozen food lineup is veggie burgers, and Amy’s Kitchen really delivers in this department.

Today we’re checking out the Amy’s Black Bean Veggie Burger.

This tasty little item comes four in a pack. All four are wrapped up into one sealed package, so unless you’re planning on eating all four at once, you’ll have to be careful when opening this so you can return the rest of the patties to the packaging and fold them up neatly inside. We would have preferred these wrapped two to a pack, but it’s not the worst packaging situation in the world.

We decided to cook these up in a pan with olive oil and a tiny bit of pepper.

There’s no way your carnivorous friends will be tricked into thinking this is real meat. It gets a little crispy around the edges, and it stays soft crumbly in the middle. It lacks the grilled, meaty flavor of beef — or even turkey — and it’s far less greasy as well. You could probably give it a more grilled flavor depending on how you cooked it, perhaps using some liquid smoke, but even then you wouldn’t convince anyone this is a real meat patty.

But the point of this veggie burger isn’t to mimic beef. This has more of a southwestern flavor to it, thanks in part to the black beans. It’s the sort of burger that works really well with avocado and maybe even a dab of sour cream.

If you break a patty apart, you’ll find some of the aforementioned black beans inside, and you might even find a piece of corn or two. The other ingredients — including mushrooms, carrots, onions, and soybeans — are quite a bit more discreet. You probably won’t find chunks of them in a patty, and we doubt you’ll taste any of them. In fact, we were pretty surprised to learn our patty had carrots in it, because we certainly wouldn’t have guessed.

While it might be a bit silly to eat one of these on its own, it definitely has a good flavor to it.

Amy’s Black Bean Veggie Burgers are a delight. We’re not surprised they’re a staple of vegetarian diets of several people we know. With the right toppings, these things make for a killer meal that even meat-eaters will love.
