With the popularity of kale these days, it really shouldn’t come as a surprise to find it in the most unusual places. Even so, we weren’t exactly expecting to find a macaroni and cheese dish built around it. Yes, the Krazy Kale Mac & Cheese by Dan’s Gourmet is exactly what the name suggests — a frozen mac and cheese that’s loaded up with kale.
Now, this isn’t your kids’ mac and cheese. It’s not very cheesy and it’s not creamy at all, and a surprisingly large amount of the flavor comes from the sun-dried tomatoes. In fact, we’d say this is probably closer to a hot pasta salad than to a traditional mac and cheese.
But that’s okay, because this tastes great. Plus, you won’t have to feel self-conscious about eating a meal for kids; while the tomatoes make this quite sweet, it’s very much an adult meal.
Now, it goes without saying that the presence of kale isn’t enough to magically transform any meal into a dieter’s dream, and it’s certainly not enough here. Keep in mind that there are two servings per dish, and a dish really isn’t that big, so if you eat a full bowl of this stuff you’ll have to double whatever the nutrition info on the box says. That means this mac and cheese has 500mg of sodium and 48g of carbs, and the calorie count isn’t low either, at 540 (260 from fat). We’ve tried macaroni dishes with more than that, but this is still loaded with calories.
If you’re looking for a bright yellow, cheesy meal that your kids will love, this probably isn’t for you. But if you’re looking for a great-tasting macaroni that’s clearly made for adults, the Dan’s Gourmet Krazy Kale Mac & Cheese might be your new favorite frozen food.
