When you’re in the right mood for it, few things are more satisfying than a smoky-tasting mac and cheese. Unfortunately, frozen mac and cheese dishes with the perfect smoked flavor seem to be few and far between. Devour packs some in with their Bacon Topped Meatloaf, but we’re looking for a standalone macaroni dish to satisfy this very specific craving.
Thankfully, Dan’s Gourmet is here to remedy that with their Smoky Chicken Bleu Macaroni & Cheese.
After just a single bite, we could already tell Dan’s Gourmet is a company that really cares about their macaroni and cheese. This is pretty close to perfection.
The chicken portion of this meal is white meat chicken breast. It doesn’t come in giant chunks — it’s actually shredded and mixed into the macaroni. It sort of gives the whole dish a bit of texture, and it makes it feel a bit “grown up” for a mac and cheese.
The cheese sauce contains gorgonzola, gouda, and sharp cheddar, which is a great mix for this particular dish. It’s not necessarily as “smoky” tasting as we expected, but it’s definitely not one of those bright yellow meals that kids are into either. Like we said before, this has more of an adult flavor.
All of this comes topped with a lovely sprinkling of spices and panko bread crumbs.
One word of warning, though. The package lists this as two servings. We’re not sure how we would split this into two helpings, and half a dish seems like a pretty tiny meal. But this means that the 220 calories advertised on the packaging is actually 440 for the full package. This isn’t a lightweight mac and cheese by any means.
Still, if you’re craving a smoky mac and cheese and you don’t mind the calories, Dan’s Gourmet Smoky Chicken Blue Macaroni & Cheese is the perfect thing for you. It tastes incredible.
