Healthy Choice Beef Teriyaki Review

Healthy Choice Beef Teriyaki

Sometimes, you’re in the mood for a nice beefy meal. Well, Healthy Choice is here to help with their Beef Teriyaki bowl. With a nice teriyaki sauce over chopped beef, some veggies, and rice, this seems at first glance like it might be just the thing to lock down a beef craving — in fact, that’s exactly what led us to this particular dish. Plus, this meal only has 280 calories, so it’s fairly light. Weight Watchers values this meal at 9 SmartPoints.

Like Healthy Choice’s other dishes, this meal’s main ingredients come in a plastic colander that keeps them elevated above the sauce while cooking. Once you’re done heating this up, simply dump the contents of the colander into the dish beneath it and give it a good stir.

We tend to think this works wonders with Healthy Choice’s frozen pasta dishes, but we’re less enthused about it when it comes to Asian dishes. Here, instead of ending up with a dish that looks like the one on the box, this turns into a bit of a mess, with the sauce all mixed up into the white rice. We would have loved to have kept these separate, as that’s clearly the way this dish was meant to be enjoyed.

Plus, the bottom of the colander hangs a bit too low, so the teriyaki sauce begins seeping into the rice before you even pull this out of the microwave. The colander seems a little pointless if it’s not really separating anything.

Regardless of how this is mixed, the teriyaki sauce tastes quite good. It has a great sweet taste, and it goes well with most of the ingredients in this dish.

Oddly enough, it actually doesn’t seem to go with the beef all that well. The beef has a savory flavor that’s much better on its own than when it’s competing with the teriyaki sauce. You might get more enjoyment by picking out the beef to eat separately, then eating the rest of the meal when it’s mixed.

The beef is also pretty juicy in the middle, though the edges are a little dry. It’s also not as tender as we’d have liked.

The veggies are really well chosen. You’ve got some carrots, a bit of broccoli, and even some water chestnuts. They all taste surprisingly fresh, especially the carrots. And, as we pointed out earlier, the veggies work really well with the teriyaki sauce.

If you’re craving a beef dinner, Healthy Choice’s Beef Teriyaki probably won’t scratch that itch. If you’re looking for a good veggie stir fry with a couple pieces of beef on the side, however, this might be the perfect thing.
