Amy’s Roasted Vegetable Tamale Review

Amy's Roasted Vegetables Tamale

We’ve had some pretty great experiences with Amy’s tamales. The Tamale Verde with Cheese is delicious, and the Tamale Verde with Black Beans is even better. So we jumped at the chance to try yet another tantalizing tamale when we discovered Amy’s Kitchen’s Roasted Vegetables Tamale.

This comes out of the microwave with a delicious, southwestern scent. Just be careful when removing it from the outer wrap, because the steam could be a mild burn hazard.

Based on appearance alone, the black beans are the least appetizing part of this meal. But don’t let looks fool you, they taste pretty good. They’re not the best black beans in the world, but they’re still pretty tasty.

Amy's Roasted Vegetables Tamale

The real joy of eating an Amy’s Kitchen tamale is the organic corn masa shell. In the past we’ve found that this shell works better when paired with vegetables than when paired with cheese, and that’s true here too. We also detected trace hints of lime, which really takes this meal to the next level. You don’t want to let the shell dry out at all, because it tastes a lot better when its drenched in sauce, but that shouldn’t be a problem here since Amy’s Kitchen is pretty generous with the black bean and gravy portions.

This tamale is stuffed with vegetables, including one or two we didn’t expect. Inside, you’ll find onions, bell peppers, diced tomatoes, zucchini, carrots, and olives. It’s quite a satisfying mix, especially when you toss in some of the aforementioned black beans. Plus, the tamale is covered in a lovely southwestern-style gravy.

At only 280 calories (and only 60 of those from fat), this tamale won’t break a diet. It’s also gluten-free, so those who are trying to stay away from gluten don’t have to avoid this delicious meal. We do have to warn you, however, that it does contain 740 mg of sodium, which is pretty high.

We went into this review craving a great-tasting, vegetarian-friendly tamale, and Amy’s Kitchen really delivered. The Tamale with Roasted Vegetables is one seriously tasty low-calorie meal.
