Smart Ones Chicken Slider Review

Smart Ones Chicken Slider

We love sandwiches, but we have to admit that we’re always a little hesitant to try microwavable versions of them. This just isn’t the type of food that naturally works well with microwaves. Still, we’ve actually tried some pretty great frozen sandwiches here at Freezer Meal Frenzy, such as Sweet Earth’s Farmstand line of breakfast sandwiches and Lean Cuisine’s Philly-Style Steak and Cheese Panini.

So we hoped for the best when we tried Smart Ones’ Chicken Sliders.

This is a Weight Watchers product, so the SmartPoints value is stamped right onto the side of the box. There’s apparently 6 SmartPoints in this meal, which we assume is calculated per sandwich (though the box isn’t perfectly clear about this).

These little sandwiches come two in a box, and each one is individually wrapped so you can easily heat up one at a time. Keep in mind, of course, that these are incredibly small, so eating just one probably won’t fill you up.

Now, the packaging shows a side of some sort of dipping sauce — it looks like a creamy taco sauce or a chipotle mayo or something — as well as lettuce, tomato, and onion. The actual sandwiches included in this box do not contain any of this stuff. These are just barebones sandwiches — breaded chicken on a bun — presumably designed to let you craft your meal however you’d like.

While we don’t mind decorating up a sandwich, having to do so certainly removes some of the convenience of these sliders. At this point, it might be easier to just purchase the chicken patty and bun separately, since we’d already have to pick up a bunch of extra stuff anyway in order to really go wild with these.

For the sake of this review, however, we decided to eat one exactly as it comes out of the box so we could comment on the product we purchased rather than something we built ourselves.

One of the things that makes us nervous about any frozen sandwich is the bread. We always expect it to come out of the microwave kind of damp. That’s not the case here at all; the bread has a really appealing puffiness to it. It also tastes great.

The chicken has a little bit of gristle to it, making it a little tough to tear with your teeth. The breading, however, has a delicious flavor. It has some spices and onion powder added to it, so there’s a little bit of a bite.

Obviously, these are not filling. If you eat one, that’s a mere 210 calories (80 from fat), but two puts you up to 420 (160 from fat), and that doesn’t include any toppings you decide to add. Those calories add up pretty fast here, preventing these from being an ideal diet food — unless you want to be hungry all day.

The Smart Ones Chicken Slider is a pretty tasty sandwich, though we do think it would be a lot better with some of the add-ons that are pictured on the box. As is, the quality is high enough that we can actually make a pretty good argument for these over making a chicken sandwich completely from scratch.
