We’ve expressed our mixed feelings about eating food out of a cardboard box in the past, but we realized it was a bit hypocritical to be so weirded out when Chinese takeout often comes in a cardboard box as well. So we’re coming to terms with So Right’s decision to use cardboard dishes for their food instead of plastic ones. And heck, it’s better for the environment and possibly healthier to eat as well.
So when we dove into So Right’s Szechuan Style Kung Pao Chicken, we welcomed the opportunity to eat it from a box. Unfortunately, this meal is a bit of a mess.
The chicken itself is alright. In fact, it might be the best part of this meal, especially when it’s covered in the kung pao sauce. The sauce is sweet and spicy, with a surprising amount of kick to it. This is a meal that will clear out your sinuses.
The veggies don’t taste fresh at all. There’s some broccoli, a few pieces of carrot, some red bell peppers, and a water chestnut or two. They all have that reheated flavor, and the kung pao sauce doesn’t really elevate them to anything special. In fact, in the case of the broccoli, the sauce actually makes it taste worse.
The rice has seen better days. Seriously, this rice looks like somebody scraped it off a boot or something. It doesn’t taste great either. It’s soggy and generic, and has very little flavor. If you can mix in some kung pao sauce, it’s not half bad, though.
So Right’s Szechuan Style Kung Pao Chicken is a letdown. You’ll likely want to eat the few scattered pieces of chicken and then toss the rest. It’s pretty much unsalvageable. Thankfully, it’s only got 290 calories (60 from fat), so you if you do decide to try this, you won’t be wasting a cheat day on it.
