Smart Ones Chicken Enchiladas Suiza Review

Smart Ones Chicken Enchiladas Suiza

If you’re a fan of enchiladas, the frozen food world is packed with options. Obviously, not all enchiladas are created equal — there are some amazing frozen enchiladas out there for sure, but there are also some real stinkers in the frozen food aisle. But don’t be overwhelmed by all this; Freezer Meal Frenzy has your back. We’ve been digging into the frozen enchilada landscape and reporting our findings back to our lovely readers.

Today’s enchilada dish is the Smart Ones Chicken Enchiladas Suiza.

This is a Weight Watchers product, so the SmartPoints value is printed right on the side of the box. This meal is worth 9 SmartPoints. For non-Weight Watcher calorie counters out there, this meal contains 290 calories (and only 60 from fat), so it’s definitely not a diet-killer.

This thing comes out of the microwave smelling very good but looking like it was dropped on the floor and then scooped back into the tray. The shells are broken, so the guts are spilling out into the rice.

Of course, when it comes to frozen foods, aesthetics matter far less than the taste. While these aren’t the best enchiladas we’ve had, they are surprisingly good.

The quality of this meal is primarily due to the sauce. According to the front of the box, this is a sour cream and green chile sauce. You can completely disregard that description, because, though it may be factually accurate, it doesn’t really convey the flavor of this wonderful sauce. When we first looked at it — and when we first tasted it — we actually thought this was a queso sauce. It’s yellow and creamy and it definitely has a cheesy flavor to it. We expected to see cheddar cheese on the ingredients list, but it’s not there.

We were also surprised to find the sauce to be a bit spicy. It’s not a ten out of ten on the spice scale, but it’s much spicier than we expected.

The enchiladas themselves are nothing special. We didn’t find a whole lot of chicken inside, and the tortillas are a bit stale and rubbery. Of course, all of the problems disappear when you douse one of these enchiladas in the yummy cream sauce, so it’s really hard to complain.

This all comes nestled on a bed of spanish rice. We didn’t have high expectations for the rice portion of the dish, but Smart Ones seems to have put some heart and soul into it. It’s actually a great-tasting rice, and we’d even be happy to eat it on its own. Throw some of the cream sauce on top and it’s a very tasty treat.

The Smart Ones Chicken Enchiladas Suiza caught us off guard. Even as a diet-friendly option, these are some of the better frozen enchiladas we’ve tried. And believe us, we’ve tried quite a few. While these don’t hold a candle to something like, say, Amy’s Spinach & Cheese Enchilada Whole Meal, they blow most of the diet-friendly options we can think of completely out of the water.
