We love a good frozen pizza here at Freezer Meal Frenzy, and we’re big fans of DiGiorno’s “better than delivery” take on crafting a quality pizza. So when we came across the DiGiorno Aloha Bacon Pizza with Bacon and Cheese Stuffed Crust, we felt a bit like we had just discovered the lost city of Atlantis. When we first saw the box, we felt like this was the pizza we’d been looking for our whole lives even though we didn’t know we wanted it until we found it.
Now, that first impression created some pretty high expectations for this pizza — expectations that might be a little bit unreasonable for a frozen food. This pizza was really going to have to work hard to blow us out of the water, otherwise there’s no way we’d leave this pizza-eating experience without feeling a bit disappointed.
But this pizza is up to the challenge.
Obviously, this is not a microwavable pizza, like many of DiGiorno’s personal-sized pizzas. This takes about 20 minutes in the oven according to the box, though we ended up having to cook ours for about 25. We acknowledge that cook times are going to vary by oven.
So how is it? Well, it’s the stuff dreams are made of.
This is a Hawaiian-style pizza, meaning it comes with pineapple and Canadian bacon. While there are people out there who would argue that pineapple has no place on a pizza, we vehemently disagree. Pineapple and pizza were made for each other!
The Canadian bacon isn’t the large slices that you might expect from a typical Hawaiian pizza; they’re chopped into small, pink bits. This causes them to get crispy instead of being moist like sliced Canadian bacon. While we prefer the bigger slices, the smaller chopped pieces actually serve this pizza quite well.
And then there’s regular bacon, which we didn’t expect. Sure, the box says there’s bacon inside the crust, but the bacon is also all over the top of the pizza as well. Bacon enthusiasts, prepare to find true love.
The stuffed crust is obviously one of the major selling features for this pizza. We love stuffed crust, and we do enjoy it here, though we must point out that the gooey, stretchy mozzarella seen on the box is a bit of an exaggeration. Yes, there’s cheese inside the crust, but there’s not nearly as much as the box would have you believe. It’s delicious, so we don’t think you’ll complain too vehemently — just know going into this that the crust’s cheese content isn’t as generous as it may appear in advertising.
There’s also bacon inside the crust. While that sounds awesome, you should tamper your expectations. Like the cheese, there’s less bacon inside than you might expect. It’s definitely there — we peeled apart some crust to make sure — but it’s not enough to make or break the pizza.
The nutrition facts say that 1/5 of a pizza is a serving size. We’re a bit confounded by that math — who splits a pizza into fifths? We’re big fans of the eight-slice method of cutting, so that leaves us scratching our heads to figure out how to split this into fifths. We feel that a an ambitious yet completely reasonable serving size is half a pizza — and we assume many people will consider this a meal for two — so we based our math around that.
So, one “serving” has 300 calories, according to the box, which means that half a pizza has 750. The sodium is a killer here, going from 690 mg in a serving to a whopping 1,725 mg in a half pizza. This is clearly not designed for everyday consumption by healthy people, so we see it as more of a guilty pleasure for a cheat day.
The DiGiorno Aloha Bacon Pizza is amazing. Add some stuffed crust and this really the sort of pizza that tried to satisfy every one of your pizza-based desires and succeeds. This is a fantastic pizza for anyone who enjoys bacon.
