So Right Chorizo with Pasta & Fire Roasted Tomatoes Review

So Right Chorizo with Pasta & Fire Roasted Tomatoes

We have mixed feelings about So Right’s choice of putting frozen food in cardboard trays, but the Chorizo with Pasta & Fire Roasted Tomatoes really caught our eye. This looks like a pretty substantial step away from So Right’s more traditional stir fry or Mexican-inspired dishes, so we were really curious to check this one out.

We do have to admit before we start that we haven’t yet found anything in So Right’s line to really fall in love with, and we still weren’t certain this would break that streak. But who knows? Maybe this is the one! So let’s dive in and see what this is all about.

We weren’t really expecting this to look like just another simple spaghetti, so we were surprised when this very spaghetti-looking dish came out of the microwave. What’s even weirder is that it smells a bit like fishing tackle. Yuck.

This sauce doesn’t really taste much better than it smells, either. It’s not a spaghetti sauce, though that’s what it might look like — this is actually a spicy tomato paste and burgundy wine sauce that has kind of an oniony aftertaste. And it’s not even all that spicy. There’s some ancho chile pepper in the mix, but we found the spice level to be pretty mild here.

The noodles aren’t great either. They have an unappealing rubbery texture that didn’t do the sauce any favors.

The shining ray of light in this dish, however, is the chorizo sausage. It’s actually really good. It’s good enough that a bite with plenty of chorizo can mitigate the bad flavor of the sauce to the point where it actually becomes enjoyable to eat.

This dish has a reasonable 280 calories (100 from fat), and the sodium level is lower than many of the frozen meals we try at 570 mg.

We were pretty disappointed by the So Right Chorizo with Pasta & Fire Roasted Tomatoes. The chorizo and the low calorie count are huge positives for us, but the taste of the sauce is enough for us to warn you to steer clear of this.
