So Right Chorizo & Potatoes with Cheesy Chipotle Sauce Review

So Right Chorizo & Potatoes with Cheesy Chipotle Sauce

We’re never quite sure what to think of So Right’s frozen-food-in-a-cardboard-box gimmick. You see, where most frozen meals come in a plastic tray that you remove from the outer cardboard box, So Right keeps their food right in the cardboard part. Once the meal is cooked, you simply peel back the top of the tray and dig in.

We are, however, quite sure of two things: So Right has a talented graphic design team, and the stuff inside the box rarely rises above mediocrity. We were hoping the So Right Chorizo & Potatoes with Cheesy Chipotle Sauce would be a nice change of pace (as far as the flavor goes, of course — we still love their graphic designs).

The ingredient that takes up the most physical space in this dish is the roasted red potatoes. We’d say that between 40% and 50% of this meal’s volume is potatoes. So it’s a good thing those potatoes actually taste pretty good. They’re not perfect, but they have a good earthy flavor and a nice firm-yet-soft consistency.

The co-star of this frozen-meal show is the chorizo. It’s maybe a little rubbery, but it tastes alright. And boy is it ever spicy! We were quite surprised at the spice level of this chorizo. It’s definitely going to deter spice-ophobes, though anyone looking for a spicy dish will probably be satisfied.

Then there are the veggies. This dish blends in some corn, black beans, and red bell peppers to give it a Southwestern vibe. Of those things, the corn does the most work. It’s not the best corn we’ve ever had, but it has more flavor than the black beans or the bell peppers. In fact, we barely even noticed that the bell peppers were there at all. Perhaps they were chosen more to add color to this dish than flavor, because they do seem like a good visual choice. They’re just a bit soggy and dull-tasting.

The cheesy chipotle sauce looks very good — it’s orange and creamy — but it’s also kind of bland. There are smoky undertones to it, which we think are great, but the overall flavor just doesn’t rise to the surface. This is the sort of sauce that would probably be good in combination with a complementary sauce, but here it stands alone. The sauce actually¬†does complement the potatoes quite well, so we can sort of see why they chose it, but it doesn’t do as much for the other ingredients in this meal.

One of this meal’s prime benefits is the calorie count. At just 330 calories (170 from fat), this is getting really close to a diet-friendly frozen food. It’s not quite there — we tend to think of diet foods as containing less than 300 calories — but it’s pretty darn close. Of course, the sodium levels are pretty intense, at 800 mg.

While not outstanding, The So Right Chorizo & Potatoes with Cheesy Chipotle Sauce is one of the better meals in the So Right frozen food lineup. It won’t blow you out of the water, but it’s a halfway decent dish with a Southwestern vibe and a good deal of spice.
