Our staffers have eaten plenty of Hot Pockets over the years — in fact, Hot Pockets were one of our first forays into the world of frozen food. Yet as adults, we tend to avoid them. Few Hot Pocket products are vegetarian-friendly, and their nutritional content leaves something to be desired.
So when we learned that Tofurky had a vegan alternative to Hot Pockets — they call it their Pocket line — we were eager to try it out. Is it really possible to recreate the cheesy, comforting flavor of Hot Pockets with plant-based ingredients? Surprisingly, when it comes to the Tofurky Ham and Cheese Pocket, that answer is yes.
This small pocket sandwich doesn’t look very impressive, but it smells fantastic. When we opened the microwave door after cooking, our nostrils were instantly hit with a mouth-watering, smoky aroma. This little pocket couldn’t cool down fast enough for our staffers.
We’re amazed by how juicy and flavorful Tofurky’s faux ham can be. All of our staffers agreed that it tasted like the real deal. Even our meat-eating staffers were impressed!
The vegan cheese is also very convincing. It has the same gooey, melty texture that real Hot Pockets offer, and unlike many vegan cheeses, there’s no unpleasant aftertaste. Our only complaint about the filling is that there isn’t more of it. As you can see in the image above, Tofurky isn’t all that generous with their filling portion.
Stinginess aside, the Tofurky Ham and Cheese Pocket is a product we can recommend to both vegans and omnivores. It’s not just a great alternative to Hot Pockets; we think the Tofurky version is the better-tasting choice. Whether you’re trying to avoid animal products or are simply looking for healthier versions of your favorite frozen foods, we definitely recommend giving this Tofurky product a try.
