Sweet Earth Moroccan Empanada Review

Sweet Earth Moroccan Empanada

We tend to really enjoy Sweet Earth’s line of vegetarian frozen foods, but we just haven’t had much luck with their empanadas. While we found the Cubano Empanada to be pretty good, both the Fandango Empanada and the La Mancha Empanada were letdowns.

So we approached the Sweet Earth Moroccan Empanada with a great deal of caution. Would this blow us away, or would it disappoint us? We tasted one to find out.

First off, we do have to say that we appreciate the low cook time on these. Just rip open the package, wrap the empanada in a paper towel, then microwave for about a minute and a half.

This empanada contains something that was oddly absent among its peer: flavor. This isn’t a bland affair; it’s got a savory flavor with sweet undertones. The savory part comes from the chickpeas and Sweet Earth’s Tuscan Savory Grounds, while the sweetness comes from the sweet potatoes and raisins. It’s a great combo that we really enjoy. It’s also not too dry or not too soggy; it’s the perfect blend of the two.

This is also a little bit spicy. It’s not going to send you running for a cold glass of milk or anything, but it will make the inside of your mouth tingle a bit. We’d call this a mild spice level.

This empanada contains 270 calories (90 from fat) and 350 mg of sodium. While those numbers are all pretty low, keep in mind that one of these is definitely not going to fill you up. Sweet Earth’s empanadas seem like they were made to snack on rather than to consume as a full meal.

While we think we still prefer the Cubano, the Sweet Earth Moroccan Empanada is definitely superior to Sweet Earth’s blander empanadas. It’s a bit small, but it’s packed with flavor.
