Lean Cuisine Origins Cheese & Fire-Roasted Chile Tamale Review

Lean Cuisine Origins Cheese & Fire-Roasted Chile Tamale

We’ve reviewed the Lean Cuisine Cheese & Fire-Roasted Chile Tamale before, but now that it’s part of the Origins line, we thought we’d give it another go. Unfortunately, this didn’t end up being one of our better ideas. We didn’t like this meal back when we tried it the first time, and we don’t like it now.

First off, this thing takes quite a bit of time to cook. Stick it into the microwave, heat it for four and a half minutes, take it out, stir it up a bit, then stick it back in for two more minutes. Six and a half minutes is the sort of cook time we’d expect from Stouffer’s, but not Lean Cuisine.

And once you’re done with all that, the thing that comes out of the microwave ends up looking like somebody threw up all over the top of it. Just looking at this thing filled us with a Lovecraftian sense of existential dread.

We carried on regardless — like the ever-brave frozen food soldiers we are — and we found this to not taste quite as bad as it looks. Perhaps this is only because our expectations were so low by this point, but we weren’t entirely disgusted by the flavor of this chile tamale.

That said, this is a far cry from a tasty meal. The tortilla has a strange, mushy texture to it; it almost tastes like a pastry. The rice and corn is a little less dry than it was the last time we tried this dish, but it’s still way too salty. The chile and cheese filling is okay, but it’s unremarkable, and it’s not enough to make up for this meal’s many failings.

The fancy new packaging is eye-catching, but there’s no reason to ever actually eat the Lean Cuisine Origins Cheese & Fire-Roasted Chile Tamale. There are tastier frozen tamales on the market, and there are better Lean Cuisine meals too. Unless you’re looking for a frozen meal that will gross out your coworkers, this dish is failure in every category.
