Devour Loaded Potatoes with Angus Beef & Bacon Review

Devour Loaded Potatoes with Angus Beef & Bacon

Anyone who reads Freezer Meal Frenzy regularly should know by now that we’re huge fans of Devour frozen food. Devour has made some of the best-tasting frozen meals we’ve ever tried, like the Buffalo Chicken Mac & Cheese, and there’s really only one product in their entire lineup that we’re not completely over the moon for.

Obviously, the Devour Loaded Potatoes with Angus Beef entered our kitchen with some lofty expectations. Today, we’re going to find out if this meal can live up to them.

First off, we have to point out that so many frozen food companies, when tasked to come up with this sort of dish, would just fill a bowl with seemingly random things and call it a day. But in this dish, the ingredients aren’t random at all; they were hand-picked by the geniuses at Devour to make the ultimate potato bowl.

Now, the potatoes here really aren’t anything special. They’re dusted with some pepper and spices, but they’re nothing to get too excited about. Thankfully, they’re not really the star of this flavorful show.

The true hero here has to be the chunks of angus beef. These cuts are incredible. They’re thick and juicy, and they strike the perfect balance between toughness and tenderness — they won’t exactly melt in your mouth, but your jaw won’t get tired trying to chomp through them. And the flavor is unreal.

The chunky queso is an excellent choice here. It has an authentic Mexican flavor, and it has mozzarella thrown in to give it a little bit of a stretchy, gooey quality. We don’t know if we can think of a better topping for a baked potato — step aside, sour cream!

There are a few other ingredients that pop in to say “hello,” but their impact on this meal is subtle. Those include applewood smoked bacon, green onions, and bell peppers. We would have liked to have had some more of that bacon so its presence were a bit louder. Even so, this is quite the tasty blend.

Devour is certainly not known for producing low-calorie meals, and some of their best meals offer loads of flavor with a heaping side dish of calories. This potato dish is a rare exception, with only 330 calories (130 from fat). When we saw that number printed on the box, we had to do a double-take. A reasonably low-calorie Devour dish? How is this possible? (Admittedly, we checked the Devour website to see if their online calorie count matched the one on the box. It does.)

In fact, this is the first Devour dish we’ve seen with less than 400 calories. The Sweet & Tangy Pulled Pork has exactly 400, and the Bacon Topped Turkey with Garlic Sauce and the Cajun-Style Alfredo with Sausage & Chicken both have 410. But it’s not rare to see a Devour dish break 600 calories (or even 700). So 330 calories is quite the achievement for Devour, and we love that they finally managed to pull it off.

As should be expected, the Devour Loaded Potatoes with Angus Beef and Bacon is an impressive dish. Devour rarely skimps on flavor, but here they’ve somehow skimped on calories. We can definitely see this being one of those meals we return to time and time again.
