Trader Joe’s Butternut Squash Mac & Cheese Review

Trader Joe's Butternut Squash Mac & Cheese

Occasionally, the Freezer Meal Frenzy staff gets into arguments about what the best season is. Some staffers insist that the finest season is spring. Other staffers advocate for autumn. If you’re on Team Fall, you owe it to yourself to try the Trader Joe’s Butternut Squash Mac & Cheese.

We missed this when it was released back in 2017, but this year we were able to pick one up before it was all gone. And boy, were we impressed.

This is a quick and easy meal to prepare; you don’t have to do much more than toss it in your microwave. Unlike some frozen dinners, however, it tastes like something that was freshly prepared. The sauce doesn’t taste too salty, and the pasta is cooked perfectly.

Trader Joe's Butternut Squash Mac & Cheese

There are three types of cheese in the bechamel sauce: gouda, cheddar, and parmesan. While the cheese blend gives the sauce a nice rich taste, the butternut squash is the flavor that stands out here. It has a slightly sweet, nutty taste that’s reminiscent of pumpkin; it’s the perfect flavor for fall. Extra ingredients like nutmeg make this feel even more like an autumn meal.

The thick rigatoni noodles are the perfect match for this dish, and there’s more than enough sauce to cover all the pasta.

Even though Trader Joe’s claims that there are two servings per container, this dish was clearly designed to be a meal for one. It clocks in at 510 calories, and it’s loaded with sodium — there are 950mgs in total. This is probably a little too indulgent to eat on a daily basis, but it’d make a great lunch or dinner when the weather is chilly.

If you’re not a fan of butternut squash, Trader Joe’s Butternut Squash Mac & Cheese probably isn’t for you, even if you love mac & cheese. However, if you have a weakness for winter squash, this meal is a must-have. It’s a creamy bit of goodness that will make you appreciate the change of season.
