Devour Sharp Cheddar Mac & Cheese with Bacon Review

Devour Sharp Cheddar Mac & Cheese with Bacon

We love Devour frozen meals here at Freezer Meal Frenzy, and we especially love their macaroni dishes. So we were pleasantly surprised to find that Devour is making more than just frozen meals these days. Unfortunately, our first foray into Devour’s non-frozen line (the Hot & Melty Nacho Mac & Cheese) didn’t go so well. It was complicated to make, and it didn’t come out tasting very good.

But because we love the brand so much, we decided to try some more of their boxed macaroni. Nacho-flavored meals can be a little tricky, and maybe the Hot & Melty Nacho Mac & Cheese was just a fluke.

So today we’re tying the Devour Sharp Cheddar Mac & Cheese with Bacon.

As you can see in our image above, this dish contains several components that need to be assembled. There’s a dish with some dry noodles in it, a pack of seasoning, a shiny gold packet of cheese, and a packet of bacon bits. Yes, the bacon bits are dry and come in their own packet, so they won’t be cooked with the rest of the meal.

You’ll need to take the various packets out of the dish, then dump in the seasoning packet and add water up to the fill line.

This has been a cause of stress for many people, we’re sure. What does Devour mean by “fill line?” To make things even more confusing, the package shows the dish with water filled to the wrong line:

There’s a line toward the bottom of the dish, and another one toward the top of the dish. The true fill line on any Devour mac and cheese dish is the bottom one. The image below shows how full your dish should be with water before you cook it.

Once that is taken care of, microwave this for four minutes. Once this comes out, you’ll want to dump in the cheese sauce and the bacon bits, then give it a good stir.

Now, before we comment on how this tastes when it’s done, we feel it’s necessary to point out that the seasoning smells like Purina Beggin’ Strips. Perhaps that’s perfectly acceptable if you’re a dog, but all of our reviewers happen to be human beings. And this scent lingers long after you’re done cooking the meal.

And when you start squeezing the cheese out of the packet, it bears a striking resemblance to Easy Cheese. It looks less like something that comes out of a spray can once everything’s stirred together, but this meal is certainly not the bright orange advertised on the package. It comes out kind of a sickly yellow color.

So far, we’ve spent a lot of time talking about how this looks, how it smells, and how complicated it is to make. So now let’s talk about the flavor.

This certainly doesn’t taste as bad as it looks, but it’s not great either. This mac and cheese barely rises above mediocrity. Plus, the cheese is watery and the bacon is sort of gravelly. This might have actually been better if Devour hadn’t attempted to add a protein.

Calorie-wise, this really isn’t so bad for a Devour meal. With 350 calories (90 from fat), this is no diet food, but it’s also nowhere in the realm of some of Devour’s insanely calorie-stuffed meals, like the Deep Dish Three Meat Pizza (at 660 calories). In fact, this is even lower in calories than the Hot & Melty Nacho Mac & Cheese. Of course, it is jam-packed with sodium, at 980 mg.

We’re quite sad to say that the Devour Sharp Cheddar Mac & Cheese is pretty disappointing. This is a real bummer, because Devour actually makes some of the best mac and cheese around. Try the Buffalo Chicken Mac & Cheese or the White Cheddar Mac & Cheese with Bacon and you’re likely to become a Devour fan for life. But skip the stuff that’s not in the freezer aisle; it’s just not worth the effort.
