Stouffer’s Chicken and Mushroom Marsala Review

Stouffer's Chicken and Mushroom Marsala

Stouffer’s has some lovely, belly-warming meals in their lineup. They make some top-notch Fettuccini Alfredo, and their Turkey Tetrazzini is not to be scoffed at. So we were intrigued when we discovered the Stouffer’s Chicken and Mushroom Marsala, which is part of the Creative Comforts line.

Now, like many of Stouffer’s meals, this has a fairly long cook time. You’ll heat it in the microwave for three and a half minutes, stir it, then pop it back in for two more. That’s a total of five and a half minutes, which is not nearly as bad as some of their other meals — such as the Four Cheese Mac with Bacon and the Meat Lover’s Lasagna — but it’s still pretty long.

Now, keep in mind that this is not a creamy sauce, like an alfredo (though we think a chicken and mushroom alfredo from Stouffer’s would be incredible). This is a marsala wine sauce, which is thinner and runnier and has a completely different flavor. It’s savory, but it has some very sweet undertones. We really enjoy it.

These sweet undertones really enhance the flavor of the chicken in this dish. And that chicken is already very good — this is some extremely flavorful chicken. It has the rich, juicy flavor of a good roasted dark meat, even though it’s actually a white meat chicken. The chunks are huge, though we only had three pieces in our dish. We could eat this chicken all day long, so we would have loved some more.

The mushrooms are also greatly enhanced by the marsala wine sauce. We weren’t sure how the sweet undertones would mesh with the fleshy, earthy taste of the mushrooms, but after tasting it for ourselves, we’re completely sold. These mushrooms taste great.

The fettuccini noodles are almost unnecessary here. We would gladly eat a full meal of chicken and mushrooms soaked in this marsala sauce. There’s nothing wrong with these noodles, mind you — we just think they can’t compete with the rest of this flavor-rich dish.

This meal contains 300 calories (60 from fat). That is the calorie content of the full package, not just a portion of it, so this really isn’t too bad. The sodium is quite high, though, at 850 mg.

Stouffer’s Creative Comforts Chicken and Mushroom Marsala is great, and we’ll definitely be picking up some more of these to keep in the freezer. This meal is the perfect thing to warm your belly on a cold autumn day, but we’d enjoy one of these frozen dinners no matter what season it is.
