Smart Ones Roast Beef, Mashed Potatoes, and Gravy Review

Smart Ones Roast Beef, Mashed Potatoes, and Gravy

We were in the mood for a traditional-style dinner, though we didn’t want to load up on calories. That put us into a bit of a tough predicament, but Smart Ones seemed to have a solution. The Smart Ones Roast Beef, Mashed Potatoes, and Gravy offers the exact sort of meal we were looking for, and it weighs in at a measly 200 calories. We’ve had some bad experiences with Smart Ones in the past, but this one features improved mashed potatoes. Maybe this will be the Smart Ones meal that wins us over.

This is a Weight Watchers product, so the SmartPoints value is printed right on the box. This meal is valued at 6 SmartPoints.

This frozen roast beef dinner is super easy to cook. Simply toss it into the microwave for five minutes (six minutes if you have a low-wattage microwave) and it’s done. Easy as pie!

This dish this comes in is separated into two trays. You might think the mashed potatoes and gravy would be portioned together but it’s actually the beef that gets the gravy. Hmm. Not what we were expecting.

The roast beef is the star of this show, so we’ll start there. This is some halfway decent roast beef. It’s certainly not going to win any awards, but it’s tender and juicy, and it has a really nice consistency. It’s a little gristly, but it’s actually less gristly than we’d expect a low-quality roast beef to be.

The gravy is very disappointing. It pretty much tastes like onion juice that had beef boiled in it. It’s also thin and watery. We were pleasantly surprised to find some mushrooms swimming around in it, but they absorbed too much of the oniony flavor of the gravy to be any good.

So how are those improved mashed potatoes? Well, we never had the previous version so we can’t compare them. We can say that these smell delicious and buttery, and they come loaded with parsley. Unfortunately, they’re soggy and bland — they definitely smell better than they taste. That’s mostly a ruse put on by the onion powder and garlic. If you just got a whiff of this, you’d be tempted to believe it was pretty tasty.

Now, we think a better gravy could have probably saved these mashed potatoes — and that would have improved the overall quality of the whole meal — but alas, it was not to be.

The Smart Ones Roast Beef, Mashed Potatoes, and Gravy is low in calories, but it’s also low in flavor. The beef portion isn’t bad, but not even the improved version of the mashed potatoes could salvage this meal.
