Tofurky Italian Sausage Review

Tofurky Italian Sausage

Even though sausage is typically made from minced meat, the word itself comes from the Latin word “salsus,” which just means “something salted.” When you think about sausage in that way, it can be made from all kinds of ingredients. There are some terrific meat-free sausage products on the market right now, which is why we’re eager to sample products like the Tofurky Italian Sausage.

This sausage can be prepared in a number of ways. We suspect that it would be juicier if it was cooked in a pan, but we went for the fastest method and nuked it in the microwave. We tossed it on a plate, threw it in, and had it heated and ready to eat in just 90 seconds. It doesn’t get much easier than that.

Although the cooking process was very simple, we were initially worried about the results. As you can see in the image above, our sausage came out very dry. We weren’t expecting our sausage to come out dripping in juices, but this sausage looks like it was dehydrated.

When we sliced up the sausage and took a few bites, we were unimpressed. The sausage doesn’t taste bad, and there isn’t an unpleasant aftertaste, but the dryness definitely has a negative impact on the texture. We wouldn’t call the sausage plain — it’s fully seasoned — but there’s not enough flavor here to counteract those texture issues.

Thankfully, there’s a very simple solution to this problem: cover your sausage with some sort of sauce. The sausage quickly soaks up the sauce, and that corrects the dryness issues. On the package, Tofurky suggests pairing the sausage with pasta, sautes, and soups — we second that suggestion! We just have one warning: since this sausage is seasoned with Italian spices, it wouldn’t pair well with a teriyaki sauce or other Asian-inspired dishes.

We don’t think the Tofurky Italian Sausage is the best meatless sausage out there — we’d give that honor to Trader Joe’s Italian Sausage-Less Sausage. Still, it’s definitely a decent option if you’re pairing it with some sort of sauce. If you’re looking for a meat alternative for an Italian meal, check this faux sausage out and see what you think!
