Lunds & Byerlys Asiago Macaroni & Cheese Review

Lunds & Byerlys Asiago Macaroni & Cheese

If you’ve never heard of the Lunds & Byerlys brand, that’s probably because you’re not from Minnesota — L&B is a chain of upscale grocery stores that can be found in and around Minneapolis. Of course, we only mention this because they’ve got their own line of frozen food, and we’ve been trying some of it out. So far, we’ve been very impressed.

Not too long ago, we tried out the Minnesota Macaroni & Cheese, which we found to be tasty but absolutely loaded with calories. Today, we decided to venture further into this frozen mac and cheese line with the Lunds & Byerlys Asiago Macaroni & Cheese.

The package offers two ways to cook this: the microwave and the oven. While the microwave will save you a whole lot of time, we strongly recommend the oven, which can take up to an hour. (If you want to see the full cooking instructions for this dish, check out our package scans at the bottom of this article.) We heated ours in the oven, and this macaroni dish cooked perfectly.

Now, we really loved the Minnesota Macaroni & Cheese, but we think the Asiago Macaroni & Cheese is even better. This is due to the incredible cheese sauce — a blend of asiago, parmesan, and what’s simply referred to as “white cheese sauce.” This is the sort of sauce that will have you scraping the dish, trying to get every last drop you can. It’s ridiculously good.

There are little flecks of green onion mixed in, but we think they’re here more for looks than anything else. The cheese blend is so potent that we didn’t notice any green onion flavor in here.

The pasta comes in your traditional elbow noodles. This won’t blow any minds — it’s what you probably expect from a mac and cheese dish — but it’s a good choice for this meal nonetheless. However, we can’t help but wonder what shell-shaped pasta would have done for this dish. We find shells to be the superior macaroni pasta, since the cup-like shape has a tendency to scoop up the cheese sauce. When you have a sauce as delicious as this one, that “scoop effect” can really enhance that flavor.

The box claims there are four servings in a package, and we disagree. We think that half a package is what we’d consider a reasonable serving size. The image below shows what half a package looks like in a dish.

While that doesn’t look like an enormous amount of mac and cheese, a half package is actually reasonably filling.

If you stick with the L&B recommendation, you’ll be consuming 210 calories (100 from fat) and 300 mg of sodium. If you take our advice and double that, it brings you up to 420 calories (200 from fat) and 600 mg of sodium. While that’s no diet food, it’s actually pretty reasonable. In fact, it’s lighter than the Minnesota Macaroni & Cheese, and considerably lower in sodium. So not only is this the better-tasting dish, it’s also the healthier of the two.

The Lunds & Byerlys Asiago Macaroni & Cheese is absolutely delicious, and it’s healthier than its sibling, the Minnesota Macaroni & Cheese. If you’re in the Minneapolis area, you should definitely give this mac and cheese a try.
