El Monterey Nacho Cheese & Beef Mini Extra Crunchy Chimis Review

El Monterey Nacho Cheese & Beef Mini Extra Crunchy Chimis

We didn’t look at the box very closely when we picked up the El Monterey Nacho Cheese & Beef Extra Crunchy Mini Chimis. We actually thought we were picking up another variation on their taquitos (of which we’ve tried several). So you can imagine our surprise when we actually cracked the box open to find something else entirely.

Now, this isn’t a bad thing. If you’re craving a taquito and end up with a box of small chimichangas, you might be a little disappointed. However, we’re an adventurous bunch, and we were actually kind of excited to taste these mini chimis.

You can cook these in the oven or in the microwave. Obviously, if you’re here for the “Extra Crunchy” part of the title, you’re going to want to use the oven. If you’re in a hurry, however, the microwave will do just fine.

Of course, if aesthetics are important to you, you probably won’t want to use the microwave. As you can see in our image above, these tend to get pretty messy-looking after a minute of nuke time.

These are loaded up with that sort of fake-tasting Mexican-style cheddar cheese that El Monterey uses in many of their products. That’s not to say it tastes bad — it’s just not very high-quality. It’s gooey and it has a nice spicy bite to it, which is pretty much what we want from the cheese inside a low-budget chimichanga.

There really isn’t a ton of beef inside these things. It gives the cheese a bit of a gravelly texture and doesn’t really affect the flavor all that much. We’re also told there are beans in the mix, but they must really be mashed good because we didn’t notice them at all.

One serving is two chimis, and there are 12 chimis in a box. A single serving (two chimis) contains 240 calories (110 from fat) and 340 mg of sodium. That’s only 120 calories (55 from fat) and 170 mg of sodium per chimi. Of course, you’re definitely not going to eat just one of these, unless it’s just a baby snack to hold you over an hour or so before a bigger meal.

The El Monterey Nacho Cheese & Beef Extra Crunchy Mini Chimis are a decent enough snack for the price. They won’t blow your mind, but they’re kind of nice to have around for those moments when you’re in a rush and have a slight hunger to take care of in a hurry.
