Smart Made Chicken Fried Cauliflower Rice Bowl Review

Smart Made Chicken Fried Cauliflower Rice Bowl

It’s been a while since we’ve tried a Smart Made frozen meal, so we were a little bit surprised when we found out that they’re still adding new items to their frozen food lineup. We saw the Smart Made Chicken Fried Cauliflower Rice Bowl at our local grocery store, and we knew we had to try it right away. We love chicken fried rice, and we’ve been sampling quite a few cauliflower-based dishes as of late, which we’ve really been enjoying.

One of the things we like about the Smart Made brand is their ability to creatively use alternative ingredients to reduce the calorie count without sacrificing flavor. This particular meal, for example, substitutes rice with cauliflower to make a healthier alternative to your traditional fried rice dish.

Now, the cauliflower certainly isn’t a convincing substitute for actual rice. It tastes and feels like cauliflower. It’s also diced, so the pieces have angled edges rather than the rounder shape of rice, which gives it a completely different feel when it’s in your mouth.

As you can see in the image above, the chunks of chicken are huge. Smart Made was not stingy with this chicken, and we really appreciate that. It’s also some pretty tasty stuff — it’s juicy and surprisingly rich for a white meat.

This has some standard rice mix-ins, such as carrots and peas, but there are also some chunks of pineapple, which gives the whole thing a bit more sweetness than your average fried rice. We really like this decision, as it gives this rice bowl an interesting flavor overall.

And on top of all this is a ginger soy sauce. Now, we should point out that the flavor is subtle — you’ll taste the cauliflower and the pineapple chunks far more than the sauce here — but it really works for us. Instead of dominating the flavor palette of this bowl, it allows the individual flavor of each ingredient to stand out more. One downside, however, is that the combination of the sauce and the cauliflower rice ends up leaving a sort of cauliflower mush at the bottom of the bowl. This isn’t a huge complaint, but we thought it was at least worth pointing out.

If you’re cutting calories, the nutrition facts on the back of the box are really going to make you sing. This meal only has 150 calories (and only 25 from fat). The sodium is a little high, at 670 mg, but that’s pretty average for a frozen meal. If you’re really trying to cut sodium, you might want to consider removing frozen food from your diet completely.

The Smart Made Chicken Fried Cauliflower Rice Bowl is a great low-calorie replacement for fried rice. While it’s not perfect, the flavor is quite impressive for how low the calorie count is. It’s not super filling, which can be a downside for calorie counters, but if you can pair this with a low-calorie side, such as a salad, you can really enjoy some healthy eating!
