Trader Joe’s Outside-In Stuffed Gnocchi Review

Trader Joe's Outside-In Stuffed Gnocchi

Trader Joe’s Outside-In Stuffed Gnocchi is a frozen food that’s been eluding us for a while. Every time we walked through the freezer aisle, we’d spot a sign advertising the gnocchi next to a big empty space. Apparently, this gnocchi is so popular that it’s almost always sold out at our local Trader Joe’s. So when we finally saw a package of this stuff in the store, we almost didn’t believe our eyes. We snapped it up as quickly as we could.

There are two ways to cook this gnocchi: on your stovetop or in your microwave. While the microwave instructions are the simplest of the two, the stovetop method doesn’t require you to do anything complex. Just toss some oil in a pan, add the gnocchi and some water, and cook everything for 5 to 6 minutes. Fair warning: our gnocchi stuck to the bottom of the pan pretty intensely, even though the pan had been coated with oil.

Cooking the gnocchi in the microwave takes about four minutes, and it’s definitely simpler than the stovetop cook method. If quick and easy meals are important to you, microwave heating is more than fine; our gnocchi was properly cooked and delicious both ways. However, we have to say that the stove delivers a superior taste.

No matter how you choose to cook it, the gnocchi has a very soft texture that’s similar to dough. In spite of that, the gnocchi holds together nicely while it cooks. We had to slice a piece open to get a clear glimpse of the gooey fillings inside.

We knew that this dish was worth waiting for as soon as we took our first bite. It’s less like a pasta dish and more like a healthier, more substantial take on pizza rolls. The dough-like texture makes this feel different from ravioli or other types of stuffed pasta; it’s almost like a gourmet restaurant decided to serve pizza pockets to its guests.

The filling definitely contains more sauce than cheese, but we don’t have any complaints about that! The mozzarella tastes fresh, and the tomato sauce has a little bit of kick to it. Even though the outer portion of the gnocchi is made out of potatoes, the taste isn’t overwhelming. If you like pizza, you’ll probably like this gnocchi too. Best of all, this gnocchi is pretty filling, which means you can easily split a bag with someone else.

If you manage to find Trader Joe’s Outside-In Stuffed Gnocchi at your local TJ’s, we strongly recommend grabbing a bag or two. This is a pizza-licious treat that’s perfect for lunch or dinner. It might not be that similar to traditional gnocchi, but who needs something traditional when you have something this tasty?
