Trader Joe’s Honey Roasted Pumpkin Ravioli Review

Trader Joe's Honey Roasted Pumpkin Ravioli

The fall season is upon us, and that means pumpkin-flavored food is everywhere we look. Pumpkin might not be a flavor that everyone loves, but the Freezer Meal Frenzy staffers happen to be big fans of this seasonal squash. Naturally, we wanted to give Trader Joe’s Honey Roasted Pumpkin Ravioli a try.

Like most of Trader Joe’s refrigerated ravioli dishes, this is a breeze to cook. Once you have a pot of boiling water, you can just toss in the stuffed pasta and let it cook for about two minutes. None of our noodles burst open while they were cooking; everything held together nicely.

The noodles are stuffed full of pumpkin and ricotta cheese. It’s a creamy-yet-earthy flavor that’s both hearty and satisfying. This is the perfect dish for a chilly fall day. What really makes it interesting, however, is that the pumpkin is sweetened with honey and brown sugar. The mix of sweet and savory ingredients really hits the spot.

Because there are so many strong flavors in the mix here, we’d advise against serving it with any sort of sauce. We simply tossed our ravioli with some melted butter, though a little bit of oil could work as well. If you want to bring out the sweetness of the dish, you could sprinkle on a little extra brown sugar. If you’re hoping to enhance the savory flavors, adding some sage or black pepper could kick this up a notch.

The package claims there are two and a half servings per container, but we really don’t see how. This batch was small enough that we don’t think it could feasibly feed more than one person, unless you had a shrinking gun and shrunk two people down to about half-size. That means that the reasonable 220 calories of this dish becomes 550. That’s quite a lot, especially with holiday feasting just around the corner.

Trader Joe’s Honey Roasted Pumpkin Ravioli definitely isn’t your standard ravioli dish! It offers an unusual blend of flavors that we loved, even though it won’t appeal to everyone. If you’re hoping to bring the taste of fall into your kitchen, look for these stuffed noodles in the TJ’s freezer aisle.
