Jimmy Dean Delights: Ham, Bell Peppers, Bacon and Onion Egg Frittatas with Turkey Sausage and Cheese Egg’wich Review

Jimmy Dean Delights: Ham, Bell Peppers, Bacon and Onion Egg Frittatas with Turkey Sausage and Cheese Egg'wich

The concept behind the Jimmy Dean Egg’wich sandwiches is this: Take a breakfast sandwich, remove the bread, then replace the bread with egg patties. While that’s conceptually pretty simple, the flavor profile of the Turkey Sausage and Cheese Egg’wich is anything but — this is a breakfast food with some nuance and complexities.

Today we’re checking out the Ham, Bell Peppers, Bacon and Onion Egg Frittatas with Turkey Sausage and Cheese Egg’wich — which is part of the Jimmy Dean Delights line of frozen food — to see what makes it such an interesting breakfast sandwich. Now, that’s one heck of a title, so let’s just refer to this as the Ham, Bell Peppers, Bacon and Onion Egg’wich, which is what Jimmy Dean calls it on their website. That’s still a bit long for a breakfast food title, but it’s far more manageable than the version we used in the title of this review.

These frittata sandwiches come four per box, and each sandwich is individually wrapped for convenience.

Cooking these is a breeze. Simply peel open the wrapper a little bit, then pop the sandwich into the microwave. The instructions on the box say to cook one of these for between a minute 40 seconds and a minute 50 seconds, but when we did that we found our sandwich to be a little cold in the center. We’d suggest two minutes or even two minutes and ten seconds to make sure your sausage patty cooks all that way through. (You can see the full cooking instructions by checking out the package scans at the bottom of this review.)

So let’s get into this sandwich!

In the beginning of this review, we talked about how we found the flavor profile to be complex. The reason for this is that the egg frittatas aren’t just plain egg; they contain the ham, bell peppers, mushrooms, bacon, and onion that you see in the title. Yes, all of that is packed into these eggy patties, making one of these sandwiches seem more like a piece of meat packed between two omelettes than anything else.

That’s not a bad thing, though. It simply means the egg portion is packed with great flavor. It has an oniony taste, while the peppers are throwing off a southwestern vibe. It’s quite good.

The turkey sausage patty tastes fine, and it’s nice and juicy. We’ve had a lot of turkey sausage that was very rubbery, but the sausage patties here don’t have that problem. In fact, we completely forgot that this was turkey sausage instead of regular (pork-based) sausage.

The cheese is light in color, so it might tempt you into thinking it’s a swiss or provolone. It’s not — this is a basic American cheese. It’s not as good as the other cheeses we’ve mentioned, but it’s pretty harmless here. Since the egg frittatas have so much flavor, the cheese is really just there to provide a little bit of gooey, stretchy something to go between the meat and egg patties, and it does that just fine.

One sandwich contains 240 calories and 850 mg of sodium, which is plenty for a full meal. Unfortunately, this isn’t a full meal — each sandwich is pretty small, and a single frittata egg’wich is certainly not enough to satisfy an AM hunger. While these are slightly more filling than some of Jimmy Dean’s other breakfast sandwiches, you’ll likely want to complement your sandwich with some fruit or something.

The Jimmy Dean Ham, Bell Peppers, Bacon and Onion Egg’wich is a breakfast sandwich that brings together several disparate ideas, yet it somehow works. Each sandwich is a breakfast adventure.
