Trader Joe’s Tiramisu Torte Review

Trader Joe's Tiramisu Torte

Tiramisù, is Italian for “pick me up” or “cheer me up,” if you believe the Wikipedia entry for this delectable dessert. Tiramisu, then is a food designed to bring happiness. If you love the stuff as much as we do, you probably agree with this sentiment — this is a seriously happiness-inducing treat!

So we were thrilled to discover the Trader Joe’s Tiramisu Torte, which was included by the Kitchn website on their list of best frozen desserts from Trader Joe’s. We brought home as fast as we could so we could try it out.

As anxious as we were to dig in, we couldn’t just eat this straight out of the freezer. This needs to thaw for a few hours before it’s ready to be eaten. We let ours sit in the refrigerator for about three hours, and it was still not quite thawed. The creamy portion still had ice crystals in it, but it certainly wasn’t bad.

Despite being filled with ice crystals, the cream was a bit runny, as you can see in the image above. Again, this isn’t a major problem, but it does make this a bit trickier to serve than a firmer dessert. You’ll have to be careful to not let the cream go dripping off and plopping onto your countertop.

Even so, this is a really tasty cream. It’s sweet and lovely, and there’s a fluffiness to it that we really enjoy. That’s good, because about three quarters of this dessert is cream filling — it represents a vast majority of the overall dessert.

The cream sits atop a rather thin crust of moist, coffee-flavored cake. Despite being so thin, it has a wonderful flavor, and it adds some much-needed body to the dessert.

All of this is topped with a lovely cocoa powder, which really completes the thing. It’s nothing surprising if you’ve eaten tiramisu before, but it’s a lovely touch nonetheless.

The box considers about one sixth of the entire thing to be a serving, which is quite reasonable for this tiramisu. It’s a bit too rich to indulge more than about that much. We think if you tried to eat more than a quarter of this at once, you’d probably regret it. That said, one serving contains 234 calories, which really isn’t that bad for a dessert that’s this rich. Obviously, you won’t want to eat this all the time, but it makes for a delicious treat to split with some friends.

The Trader Joe’s Tiramisu Torte is a delicious Italian treat that we think you’ll really love. It’s a little runny, but if you can deal with that, you’re in for a really rich and satisfying dessert.

Delicious! I scooped it out with an ice cream scooper after thawing.

I thawed the tiramisu as directed for 3 hours in the refrigerator. I pulled it out to find that the plastic dish it is in is flimsy, and the entire dessert shifted over to one side when I tipped it slightly while lifting it up. It couldn’t be cut into pieces because it was so soft. So we scooped it out into small bowls and ate it with a spoon. It was really good tiramisu, but I wasn’t able to serve it as slices. Next time I will scoop it into bowls in the kitchen and top it with sifted cocoa powder before serving it to guests. A+ for flavor, D for form.
