Boca Original Chik’n Veggie Patties Review

Boca Original Chik'n Veggie Patties

Chicken is one of the most popular foods in the world, but it’s not something that all of our staffers eat. If you eat a meatless diet, or if you simply try to limit your chicken intake, you might be on the lookout for decent substitutes. That’s why we’re always eager to review products like the Boca Original Chik’n Veggie Patties.

Boca says that one patty equals one serving, which seems about right to us. However, when you open up the box, you’ll find that they’re divided up into packages of two. You’ll need to be prepared to cook two patties at once or seal up the extra patty so that it stays fresh.

Thankfully, whether you choose to cook them one or two at a time, heating these patties up is a pretty easy process. If you’re cooking one of these on your stovetop, Boca recommends heating it for 10 to 12 minutes. Our patties, however, were already slightly browned by the time we were eight minutes in.

If you want to go with the oven, the cooking instructions say that the patties should be baked for 12 to 14 minutes, which seems about right to us. Although there are microwave instructions as well, we’d recommend heating this on the stove or in the oven for a crispier, more evenly-cooked patty.

How does it taste? We’d only rank it as “okay,” but that doesn’t mean it’s not a reasonably convincing chicken facsimile. This isn’t going to compare to a chicken sandwich from a restaurant, but it’s probably not that far off from your standard frozen patty. Add the right toppings, and you have yourself a passable meatless chicken substitute.

Initially, we fixed these patties up as though they were veggie burgers, with lettuce, cheese, ketchup, and mustard. However, we found that they tasted much better when served with barbecue sauce. We even tried mashing a patty up to make a barbecue chik’n wrap, and we thought it was a step up from our chik’n burgers.

The Boca Original Chik’n Veggie Patties aren’t a bad option for vegetarians that are really in the mood for chicken. These patties aren’t the best faux chicken on the market, but they’re decent, reasonably healthy, and easy to prepare. With 11 grams of protein per patty, they’re also pretty filling, especially when they’re served as just one ingredient in a greater meal. If you’re looking for new imitation chicken, this product is worth checking out.
