Sweet Earth Awesome Pasta Puttanesca Review

Sweet Earth Awesome Pasta Puttanesca

Pasta puttanesca is a dish with mysterious origins. Some legends say that it was created to feed hungry patrons of brothels in the Spanish Quarters. Others say it was a makeshift dish thrown together by a restaurant owner in the 1950s. No matter where it comes from, we were eager to try out the Sweet Earth take on this dish, the Sweet Earth Awesome Pasta Puttanesca. This one is vegan-friendly!

This is a pretty basic frozen dinner, and as long as your microwave is in good working order, preparing it shouldn’t be a problem. Pop this pasta dish into the microwave, give it a stir, then cook it for a little longer and you’re good to go. Make sure you really mix up the pasta before tossing it back in the microwave, though — parts of our meal were still frozen solid before we stirred it up. At first glance, it might look as though this sauce contains ground meat, which is decidedly not vegan-friendly. However, once you take your first bite, you’ll know you’re not eating real meat. This dish is made with Sweet Earth’s Awesome Grounds, which are slightly mushy and don’t effectively mimic the taste or texture of ground beef. In fact, we found the sauce to be so sweet that it almost tasted like it was made with fruit.

We weren’t totally sold on the sauce, but the pasta helped to make it work. It’s just a basic spaghetti — not anything fancy — but we were really surprised and impressed by how good this is. The texture is perfect, and it almost tastes like fresh pasta, which is much more than we’d expect from a microwavable dinner. Sure, the sauce is too sweet, and the dish contains a few too many olives for our personal liking, but the pasta partially made up for that.

The Sweet Earth Awesome Pasta Puttanesca doesn’t really taste like authentic puttanesca, but it’s still pretty tasty. This is a case where nailing one ingredient takes the whole meal up a notch. We didn’t love the sauce, and we’re not sold on the Awesome Grounds, but gosh darn it, Sweet Earth sure knows how to make a solid frozen pasta.
