Amy’s Macaroni & Cheese Review

Amy's Macaroni & Cheese

There is no shortage of frozen takes on the classic mac & cheese dish. Amy’s Kitchen throws its own contender into the mix with their simply titled Macaroni & Cheese, so we here at Freezer Meal Frenzy decided to check it out.

The very first thing we noticed was its strange appearance. Upon taking it out of the package, we were a little disconcerted by its Han-Solo-in-Carbonite look.

Once we got it heated up, however, this dish’s true form emerged, offering a meal that was bright yellow and creamy, just as mac and cheese should be. While some frozen mac and cheeses suffer from being too watery, the texture of Amy’s Macaroni & Cheese is just right.

The cheddar cheese sauce has a bit of sharpness to it that we weren’t expecting, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, that’s the main thing that makes this stand out from other macaroni dishes out there. After a few bites, we’d had time to adjust and we found ourselves enjoying the dish quite a bit.

Another trouble spot for many mac and cheese variants is the pasta, which can either be too soggy or undercooked and stiff. Amy’s organic pasta holds its own, though, maintaining a great consistency up to the very last bite.

Fundamentally, mac and cheese is a simple dish, and while we can think of at least a dozen ways to spice it up just off the tops of our heads, we actually admire Amy’s Kitchen for keeping things basic here.

When I was working I depended on Amy’s products and this was one of my favorites. I spice it up by adding vegetables and/or chicken bites. I don’t think I’ve ever eaten it plain. They used to have a low sodium choice which I loved. I can add my own version of “salt” and still be low sodium. Is it still available. That version would be my first choice.
