Evol’s line of frozen meals seems to be almost limitless. Their Sausage, Egg White & Cheddar sandwich, for example, promises a tasty chicken apple sausage patty with egg and cheese for only 200 calories.
In the past, we’ve had trouble following the instructions on the Evol sandwich packages, which tell us to cut the ends of the packaging open and put it into the microwave for a minute and 45 seconds. The problem with this is that the cheese tends to stick to the packaging, and removing the sandwich becomes a messy ordeal. Instead, we’ve learned to remove the package entirely before heating, so this is the method we used for the Sausage, Egg White & Cheddar. The only complaint we have about the way our sandwich heated was that the bottom piece of flatbread got a little soggy, which made holding the sandwich feel unpleasant.
The sausage is definitely the centerpiece of this meal, and fortunately it manages to carry a lot of weight. It has a nice smokey taste, followed by a sweet aftertaste, which is no doubt provided by the cleaver addition of apples.
The egg is a little rubbery and doesn’t have much flavor, but the cheese, which should be sufficiently melted if heated properly, mitigates the effects of both the strange texture and the lack of flavor. All of the elements combine to make a pretty great sandwich. It washes down well with a cold glass of orange juice or organic milk.
Of course, while the low calorie count might be a boon, this sandwich just isn’t filling enough that we’d feel satisfied after eating just one. Once you add a second — or, heaven help you, a third — the calories start adding up pretty fast.
Evol’s Lean & Fit line of products isn’t always great, but for our money, the Sausage, Egg White & Cheddar sandwich is a winner.
