Evol began with burritos, so it seems like a no-brainer to expand the line-up to tacos as well. This is exactly what the company did in 2014. We here at Freezer Meal Frenzy decided to try them all.
The Uncured Bacon, Potato & Poblano Street Tacos are a strange beast. While the uncured bacon isn’t all that surprising, the addition of potato chunks was a pretty creative decision. Add some poblano peppers, a little bit of onions, and a smattering of cheese and you’ve got yourself a hearty little mash that’s tucked inside soft corn tortillas.
And yes, “mash” is the best word we could think of for the taco filling here, as it’s really sort of an unpleasant-looking paste. It doesn’t taste as bad as it looks, though it’s actually a little bit bland.
Thankfully, there is a packet of mango habenero salsa to save the day, giving the whole thing a sweet zing.
Don’t be fooled by the word “habenero,” though, or the fact that the box promises a high spice level; this salsa isn’t spicy in the least. It’s more of a flavor-giver than a spice-giver, and we’re pretty okay with that. (For a spicier treat from Evol, try their Spicy Steak Big Burrito.)
The corn tortillas might be the best part of this dish. They have an authentic flavor; if you’ve ever partaken in the food truck taco ritual, then you’ll feel right at home with these guys. Plus, the tortillas are curved upward to better keep the ingredients inside the taco where they belong.
All things considered, the Uncured Bacon, Potato & Poblano Street Tacos make for a pretty decent meal — not a great meal, mind you, but a pretty decent one. And, even with the potato content, this is not a meal that will fill you up when you’re feeling especially hungry.
Personally, we find the Korean Style Beef & Kimchi Street Tacos to be the best item on Evol’s frozen street taco menu.
