Lean Cuisine Favorites Review: Macaroni & Cheese

Lean Cuisine Macaroni & Cheese

Frozen mac and cheese is not difficult to find. Just about every frozen food producer we can think of offers its own variety on the stuff. Some are winners and some are losers, but most of what we’ve tried is somewhere in the middle. Lean Cuisine’s Macaroni & Cheese is one of those dishes that’s perfectly comfortable on the middle ground.

The perfect mac and cheese is typically a light yellow color, but this dish is a little too nuclear yellow to nail that look. It’s kind of fake and plastic looking, which makes it less appealing than some other mac and cheeses we’ve sampled.

But looks aren’t everything. The one great thing this dish has going for it is the consistency. It’s creamy without being watery, which is a difficult balance for any frozen pasta meal to pull off.

Another benefit is the low calorie count. At 300 calories (50 from fat), this is a leaner dish than some of the other mac and cheese meals out there, such as Sweat Earth’s Pizza Mac & Cheese at 330 (170 from fat) or Amy’s Kitchen’s Chili Mac at 420 (130 from fat).

Unfortunately, there’s just not a lot of flavor. In fact, we’d say this dish’s taste is really more of an aftertaste. There’s a sharp hint of the cheddar cheese sauce, but it doesn’t hit right away and then lingers for a long time afterward.

As a part of Lean Cuisine’s Favorites line, the Macaroni & Cheese wasn’t a perfect meal by any means. But with a little more flavor, this could have been a fantastic frozen dish.
