Devour’s frozen food line recently caught our eye — perhaps because every dish looks incredible, or maybe it’s just because the packaging tends to be so well designed and we’re easily drawn in by good marketing. Either way, when we spotted Devour’s Buffalo Chicken Mac & Cheese at our local Target, we knew we had to try it.
This dish does require a bit of time to heat up. The directions say to heat it in the microwave for three and a half minutes, stir, then heat for two and a half more. That’s a total of six minutes of heating time, which is pretty high for a macaroni dish. Of course, that might be due to the chicken content — the chicken chunks are surprisingly large here, and eating under-cooked chicken has the potential to be unsafe.
After all that cooking and stirring, this meal doesn’t come out looking anything like the creamy, delicious dish pictured on the box; it’s actually a curdled mess.
But don’t let aesthetic stop you from trying this; it’s actually the best-tasting mac and cheese dish we’ve tried so far.
The chicken tastes wonderful — it’s a high-quality meat with a wonderful breading. It has that melt-in-your-mouth consistency, making it the perfect chicken for a macaroni dish.
The noodles strike a good balance between soft and firm. Too many of the pasta dishes we try get the noodles wrong; either they’re too soggy or they have a weird aftertaste. Devour gets the noodles just right.
All of this comes doused in a buffalo cheddar cheese sauce. The texture is a little bit odd, as you can see in our picture above, but it tastes incredible. It’s also pretty spicy, so keep a glass of milk handy while you scarf this meal down.
And you’ll definitely be scarfing it down. While you’ll want to savor every bite, it’s so delicious that you’ll probably find yourself scooping it into your mouth like a cartoon character. It’s that good.
