Devour White Cheddar Mac & Cheese with Bacon Review

Devour White Cheddar Mac & Cheese with Bacon

We’ve only recently discovered the Devour line of frozen foods, but after trying the unparalleled Buffalo Mac & Cheese, we wanted to try every meal Devour makes. You might even call it our new obsession.

Since the Buffalo Chicken Mac & Cheese was such a big hit, we decided to try another of their macaroni dishes, the White Cheddar Mac & Cheese with Bacon. We dove in with high expectations, and even so, this frozen meal impressed us on every level.

The only real problem we had with the Buffalo Chicken dish was that it wasn’t pretty to look at. The White Cheddar version far surpasses it in this area; this meal looks amazing.

And it tastes amazing as well. The white cheddar sauce has a rich, smokey flavor, which pairs incredibly well with the bacon bits. These bacon bits are also amazing — they’re large, chewy, and jam-packed with flavor. The pasta is spiral-shaped, which is arguably the superior pasta shape. This is a meal that shows off a lot of really smart choices on the part of Devour.

This dish comes with a downside, though. If you’re on a diet, you’ll definitely want to pass it by. It’s loaded with 710 calories (370 from fat), making it one of the highest-calorie meals we’ve tried. It also packs a whopping 1200 mg of sodium inside. If you so much as glance at this meal, your sodium levels will spike.

Devour’s White Cheddar Mac & Cheese with Bacon is one of the best macaroni dishes we’ve tried, but its wonderful flavor comes with a heaping pile of calories. Enjoy this meal in moderation.

Ok, aside from the fact that one bowl of their Creamy Alfredo Mac and Cheese will give you almost 50% of your daily sodium intake (which means it won’t be easy if you eat most anything the rest of the day that will get you in hypertension area.  If you’ve got high blood pressure already, this is has red flags all over it.  Same with the fat content.  This probably would be an OK choice if you planed not not eating anything else the rest of the day.
But I have a much more petty complaint, and I don’t know if it applies to ALL of the Devour selections as I only tried this Mac & Cheese, but who writes their instructions?  In step one, the instructions show 4 packets of ingredients; in step two, it explains to add the entire content of the Seasoning Mix to the bowl.  In step three it say to fill water “to the line.”  But there IS NO FILL LINE on the bowl.  So now what?  I have had many other dehydrated fast foods and the water line is clearly indicated.  FILL TO HERE.  Not this product. So I filled to what I judeged to be about what it would need.  I was wrong. I added much to much water.  Ironically the instructions say NOT to over fill — well then put a distinct fill line on the bow!.  Next there are the other three packets of ingredients; the instructions totally forget about them as if they were never there.  What do I do with the other three packets?  Do they go in with the water…do they go in after the thing is all done?  Who knows because after Step 1, there is no mention of them ever again.  There IS instructions to add the Cheese Sauce when the microwave step is done, but not those three mystery packets.  This company needs to get someone who can write clear instructions.  I wouldn’t hurt to hire a health-conscious cook who can create recipes that won’t kill people with high blood pressure.
