If you’ve ever strolled down the freezer aisle at a Whole Foods, then you’ve undoubtedly come across the 365 Everyday Value brand of frozen foods. As the name suggests, this frozen food line boasts organic ingredients and affordable prices. We recently stopped by our local Whole Foods and decided to try out the Macaroni & Cheese to see how it lives up to the promises on the box.
This meal can be heated up in the microwave, and we found it adorable that the instructions tell us to pull it out and shake it after the first three minutes. We’re used to being told to stir.
Whether you shake or stir, this meal makes some noise in the microwave. It pops and cracks and sounds a little bit like it might be boiling. We were a little nervous to pull it out, worried that it might have exploded all over the inside of the microwave. As it turns out, everything was fine besides the edges of a couple noodles, which didn’t soak up enough sauce and stayed dry through the cooking process.
As for taste, this mac and cheese is okay. The sauce is simultaneously a bit to milky and a bit too salty. The organic wheat pasta is a little strange too, but perhaps that’s just because we’re not used to it. That might seem a little bit harsher than we mean it to, because once we dug in, everything was pretty alright.
The calorie count is a little higher than we’d expected, at 490 (180 from fat). At that many calories, we’d prefer chowing down on Devour’s Buffalo Chicken Mac & Cheese, which tastes quite a bit better.
As it stands, the 365 Everyday Value Macaroni & Cheese failed to impress us, but it wasn’t bad or anything. We’ve just had far better mac and cheese. If you find yourself at a Whole Foods and you’re in a rush, don’t feel bad about tossing one of these into your cart. But if you’re looking for the best possible mac and cheese, there are better options out there.
