Lean Cuisine’s line of frozen pasta dishes seems like it’s never-ending. This is a good thing, since it contains delicious items like the Four Cheese Cannelloni and the Spicy Penne Arrabbiata. We dug into yet another dish — this time the Creamy Basil Chicken with Tortellini — to see if Lean Cuisine can keep this winning streak alive.
First off, we put this chicken to the test. We found it to be rather inconsistent. Some of it is actually quite good if a little dry, but we found pieces that have an oddly fishy taste. We’re not sure what that’s all about, but it doesn’t seem like a good sign. This is even stranger when you consider that some of Lean Cuisine’s other chicken dishes — like the Alfredo Pasta with Chicken & Broccoli — are just fine.
The sauce is a little saltier than we’d have liked. It’s like Lean Cuisine realized the sauce was kind of bland and tried to make up for it by adding salt. We don’t think it’s the right choice for this dish.
The pasta is a little weak too. We tried this dish on two separate occasions, and we couldn’t get the pasta’s consistency right. It seemed a bit undercooked both times. On top of that, there’s very little of the cheese filling we were promised. Its presence is almost indiscernible.
If you’re a fan of green beans, however, you’ll flip your lid. This dish is loaded with them, and they have a pretty decent flavor. They don’t taste fresh by any means, but they have a nice crunch to them.
Lean Cuisine’s Creamy Basil Chicken is a pretty mediocre meal, though you might enjoy it if you simply can’t get enough green beans.
