Evol Panang Curry Chicken Review

Evol Panang Curry Chicken

Evol seems to really excel when it comes to Mexican-inspired frozen food. Their burritos are among our favorites, and they make some pretty good street tacos as well. But they don’t always do well when they stray outside of the Mexican food realm. So when we spotted the Panang Curry Chicken, we couldn’t help but wonder how Evol would do at making a curry dish.

The first thing we noticed when we pulled this out of the microwave is that it’s far less orange than it looks on the box. The packaging makes this thing look like it’s a bright, fluorescent orange, like it’s all dressed up to go deer hunting in the woods or something. In real life, the colors are a lot more muted. There’s also quite a bit less chicken than the package might have you believe.

But the chicken that’s here is excellent. It’s not dry, like some other frozen chicken meals, and it has a nice grilled flavor.

Everything else in this dish is pretty nondescript. It’s loaded with veggies — broccoli, bell peppers, carrots, and snap peas — and those taste pretty good. They’re pretty high-quality ingredients, but it’s hard to get excited about the veggie portion of a dish that’s supposed to be loaded with curry and chicken.

And that leads us to our biggest complaint. The real star of the show is supposed to be the curry, and it’s pretty subtle. You’ll taste it, surely, and there’s even a little bit of a bite to it, but its not going to blow you away. If you’re looking for an intense curry treat, you might want to look elsewhere.

Evol’s Panang Curry Chicken is an alright dish, though tamper your expectations. We doubt this will become your new favorite food. In fact, Evol also has a Chicken Tikka Masala bowl, and we like that one a bit more than the Panang Curry Chicken.
