Lean Cuisine has some real gems in their Craveables line. Try their Garlic Chicken Spring Rolls for a tasty treat, or their Chicken Club Panini for a surprisingly good microwavable sandwich. The Pepperoni Pizza is a simpler meal that plays it a little safer than the other two items we mentioned, but it’s a pretty decent frozen pizza nonetheless.
Like many of its competitors, this pizza comes with a foldable box that has a built-in crisping tray.
While it doesn’t get the pizza actually crispy, it does prevent microwave sogginess. And this box is pretty easy to fold, unlike some other boxes we’ve had to wrestle with. This isn’t quite as elegant as Devour’s solution, but it’s definitely easy, which is something we definitely can’t say about some of the other frozen pizzas on the market.
Now, Lean Cuisine’s trick to making a good pizza is the sauce. It has a nice sweetness to it that really stands out while completing the overall flavor of the pizza.
The crust, as we mentioned earlier, isn’t crispy. It’s not really a thin crust, though it’s definitely thinner than Lean Cuisine’s deep dish pizzas. While there are a few parts along the very edges that seem a little too hard, the vast majority of the crust actually has a really good consistency. And it doesn’t taste half bad either.
The pepperoni is definitely the weakest part of this pizza. It has a dry, tough quality to it, almost like a beef jerky. We would have preferred something either crispy, like many of the delivery pizzas out there, or a bit softer and juicier, like DiGiorno’s pepperoni. Lean Cuisine’s version doesn’t try to do either of these things, and it’s definitely worse off for it.
And hey, Lean Cuisine, would it really have killed you to add a little more cheese to this?
While Lean Cuisine’s Pepperoni Pizza isn’t the best microwavable pizza on the market, it’s quick, easy, and pretty darn tasty. If the pepperoni feels off to you — like it does to us — you can always opt for the cheese version of this pizza, which is also a pretty good choice.
