We’ve eaten quite a few frozen pizzas in our day, and we’d say that Lean Cuisine usually does alright in this category. These microwavable pizzas won’t blow you away, but they typically make for an alright meal or snack when you’re in a hurry. With the Thin Crust BBQ Recipe Chicken Pizza, however, the company shows off a little bit. This isn’t marketed to those who want any old pizza; it’s for those who want something a cut above the normal stuff.
All this is, of course, based entirely on our reading the packaging. It looks delicious, doesn’t it? But here at Freezer Meal Frenzy, we’re not content to just look at a box and make an opinion, we want to dig in and really find out what’s under the hood, so to speak.
So we took the Lean Cuisine Thin Crust BBQ Recipe Chicken Pizza home and cooked it up.
This comes in one of those boxes that can be ripped apart and folded to provide a crisping tray for microwave use. It works as intended, and the box isn’t a hassle to deal with, like some of the other boxes we’ve folded.
It comes out smelling intensely of BBQ sauce, which we took as a pretty good sign.
Unfortunately, when it comes to actually eating the thing, this pizza is loaded with problems.
First off, the crust is a bit soggy, even with the use of the crisping tray. The BBQ sauce definitely doesn’t taste as good as it smells — it actually has kind of a plasticy flavor to it. The chicken is just alright, and there isn’t enough cheese to really have an opinion about it except that there should have been more.
To top it off, this is one of Lean Cuisine’s higher-calorie offerings, at 390 (80 from fat). You can cut the “Lean” out of the Lean Cuisine at that point.
Obviously, we had pretty high hopes for this pizza after spotting it at our local grocery store. But the Lean Cuisine Thin Crust BBQ Recipe Chicken Pizza doesn’t do anything to rise above mediocrity besides coming in a pretty package. And that’s the part we threw away. The part we actually ate is pretty disappointing.
